The 2019 Centurion Team

The F1 in Schools Technology Challenge is a multi-disciplinary challenge open to all secondary schools, sixth form colleges, colleges of further education and other organised youth groups. Teams of 3-6 students aged 11 to 19 deploy CAD/CAM software to collaborate, design, analyse, manufacture, test, and then race miniature compressed air powered high density foam F1 cars. Teams of 3 – 6 students are judged on car speed, as well as supporting evidence of their design, verbal presentation and marketing display stand in ‘‘the pits”.

The Centurion Team

Aiming for the winning post...

Laurence Vines

Laurence’s dynamism and enterprise were the catalyst for the foundation of the Centurion Racing F1 in Schools team. Laurence is an aspiring F1 race engineer. His passion for all things motorsport has given him a good overview as to the necessary components of an F1 team.
Laurence regularly represents Rishworth School at maths and technology tournaments. For many years he operated the lighting board in the Performing Arts Centre for school productions, events and GCSE and ‘A’ level performances. He has had technical experience with more than one of the team sponsors. Laurence assists at local events with The Switch Entertainment, controlling laser light displays. And he spent his work experience week at Microkerf (2017 season sponsor), a laser processing specialist in precision cutting where he had in depth experience of computer modelling, experience essential to his role as Design Engineer.
Laurence is an accomplished musician on both the saxophone and the violin. He is currently the lead alto saxophone in Musica Youth Jazz and guests with the Young Philharmonia, the flagship youth orchestra in the north of England. He travels to the Southbank Centre in London at weekends to participate in the Tomorrows Warriors Development Program for emerging jazz artists. The discipline of playing an instrument to a high level and the team work and coordination involved in being a musician are skills which he brings to the role of Team Manager.

Grant Torrington

Grant is a technophile. His love for technology and problem solving makes him the perfect person for the role of ICT Manager
Grant is an aspirant Film Maker and Director with a workexperience on film sets and in the animating studio of the award winning digital production team of Quickfoot Media. He utilised and further developed his skills during a work experience week at Torrington Orthopaedics, a current team sponsor. He put together a promotional film for the company and also worked making the 3-D renders used as part of the veterinary intervention process. He uses this experience to very good effect when making the films for Centurion Racing, where he seamlessly blends live shots and rendered images of the car.
For many years Grant was jointly responsible for running the Rishworth School Film Club which meets on a weekly basis and where they look at both the process of film making and also analyse what makes an effective film. He also operated the sound board in the Performing Arts Centre for school productions, events and GCSE and ‘A’ level performances. Grant has used the technical, analytical and visual arts skills developed through his various activities to design an effective and impactful web site for Centurion Racing and in the other areas of the F1 in Schools challenge which require Graphic Design.

Lara Quinn-Beaumont

Lara’s entrepreneurial skills running her own small local business allowed her to save and successfully purchase her own car at the age of 12. She has since gone on to win two business enterprise competitions. She has brought her considerable resourcefulness and initiative to the role of Relationship Manager within the team.
Lara is used to performing under pressure and has represented Rishworth School in a variety of sports and is currently ranked second in Calderdale for shot put. She has a passion for skiing and Lara pushes the limits of freestyle and racing. She skis weekly and is highly experienced off piste, skiing regularly in America and the Alps.
Lara combines art and design with a strong background in maths and three-dimensional problem solving and has a passion for physics. She has attended courses in engineering at both Warwick and Coventry University. Working with Aston Martin at Coventry University she led a team to competition success in the design, manufacture and creation of a high-performance track car. She has also attended a programme with the Royal Navy studying Nuclear Marine Engineering and will be returning to Warwick University this year to further her studies on Physics in Engineering. Her depth of experience makes her ideally suited for her role as Manufacturing Engineer. Lara is hoping to join Rolls Royce for her work experience this year and is looking towards a career in automotive engineering.

Erica Essel

Her in-depth understanding of computers and programmingdeveloped from this early experience was key in herbecoming the team’s Graphic Designer and Social Media Content Manager.
Erica joins Centurion Racing with previous F1 experience gained at school in Dubai. She was a member of an all-girls team which, after her return to the UK, went on to win in the Regional Finals. Her prior experience has proved a great assetto the team and she has generated many new ideas which have proved invaluable.

She attended an engineering course in 2017 at Warwick University and will be attending a further engineering course thissummer at RAF Cosford. Her attention to detail and interest in law led her to success and recognition in the BBC School Report initiative with her article about the increasing prices in housing and related issues.
